A 65-year-old tourist was seriously injured in a bison attack in Yellowstone National Park. Photographer Mike MacLeod had previously observed the animal behaving unusually aggressively and threatening other park visitors, he reported Cowboy State Daily. So he started filming the situation.
Shortly afterwards the bison ran towards the man and his grandson. The two tried to get to safety behind a tree. However, the animal caught the 65-year-old, threw him several meters into the air and threw him to the ground. The man suffered several broken bones in his hip and leg.
The bison stood over the injured man and shook his head repeatedly. Mike MacLeod feared the animal might impale the tourist lying on the ground with its horns. He then stopped filming, ran towards the bison and shouted as loudly as he could to get its attention. Several other visitors followed his example and also made noise. Only the joint intervention caused the bison to retreat and finally run away.
Victim speaks out
Ultimately, the man in question was lucky in misfortune. He said on Monday that he broke his femur in four places and suffered several bruises CNN. But now he can stand again. “It’s not as bad as it could have been,” he says. He will undergo physical therapy in the next few days.
He also thanks the helpers. “Everyone present was incredibly helpful,” he says. Among other things, a nurse took care of his leg while another passerby supported his head. The two-hour drive to the hospital was extremely painful, but paramedics were there to help him along the way.
Regarding the incident itself, the man says that he watched the animal with his grandson because it behaved calmly. Then a truck drove past and honked. This apparently worried the bison. He suddenly approached the two of them. “There was little time to decide what to do,” said the man. He therefore decided to lure the bison away while his grandson could run away.
This is the second incident involving a bison in Yellowstone this year. On June 26, a 12-year-old child was attacked.
June to September is the rutting season for bison. During this time, the bulls fight for dominance and for the females and therefore behave particularly aggressively.
