A severe earthquake occurred off the coast of Taiwan. The earthquake, about 30 kilometers east of Yilan County, was recorded with a magnitude of 7.0, the Taiwan Meteorological Agency said. It occurred around 11 p.m. local time at a depth of over 72 kilometers. Further details were initially not known.
Taiwan lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped zone along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (sda/dpa)
