In the case of US presenter Savannah Guthrie’s mother, who has been missing since the beginning of the year, the media is reporting on a letter that speaks of the 84-year-old’s death. It was a message that was sent months ago, which followed an alleged blackmail letter including a ransom demand, reported the broadcasters CNN and NBC News, among others, citing sources familiar with the matter. Investigators assumed that both messages were messages from the kidnappers, writes CNN.
In the second message sent to US media, it was stated that Nancy Guthrie had died shortly after her abduction, the broadcaster quoted sources from investigative circles. It was also said there that they had no intention of killing her. According to NBC News, the second message did not contain an apology or a request for money to return the body of the US presenter’s mother.
Both channels further reported that Savannah Guthrie commented in a short video message on Instagram after the second message. In the video from the beginning of February, the moderator said, among other things, to the perpetrator or perpetrators, “We are now begging you to give us back our mother.” She also indicated that the family was prepared to “pay” for the mother’s return. “We received your message and we understand,” she said. What was meant by that remained unclear.
Guthrie’s fate caused a national stir in the United States. President Donald Trump and the FBI also became involved in the case. Nancy Guthrie, who had a heart condition and was dependent on medication, was last seen on the evening of January 31st. Since then she has disappeared without a trace. Investigators in the state of Arizona are assuming a kidnapping. The family has offered a reward of one million dollars (around 870,000 euros) for helpful information. (sda/dpa)
