It’s not far from Braunschweig to an absolute rarity: a gold Lego brick will be auctioned on May 9th at the Quedlinburg Art and Auction House. It can be reached from the Lion City in around an hour.
The trip should be worth it for those interested: The 2×4 studded stone is made of 585 yellow gold, weighs 25.4 grams and dates from 1986. However, it is correspondingly expensive to buy. The auction house sets the limit at 5,000 euros.
Golden Lego brick: Only 10 copies worldwide
On Instagram, the Quedlinburg art and auction house described the stone as possibly the “most expensive toy in the world”. It also says there are only ten copies worldwide. The auction house announced the auction as a highlight for Lego fans and collectors.
The brick is the original size of a classic Lego building block. There are eight cylindrical knobs on the top and three tubes on the bottom in typical Lego construction. There is a fineness stamp on the side. The piece is sold in a blue plastic box with a velvet inlay and an embossed Lego logo in the lid.
Golden Lego bricks were once a gift
The offer also includes an original cover letter from Lego GmbH in Hohenwestedt. The letter is dated October 1986 and signed by managing director Gerd Balke and Hilmar Scheinpflug. Accordingly, the golden stone was presented as a gift for the 20th anniversary of service.
According to the auction house, such gold stones were awarded by the company to long-time employees – although apparently less often than a dozen times.
