Veteran feminist activist Emma Bonino, who rose to political prominence in the 1970s as a leader of campaigns to legalise abortion and divorce in heavily Roman Catholic Italy over the objections of the Vatican, has died aged 78. Bonino, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, served as foreign minister and European commissioner but failed in her bid to become Italy’s first woman president.
