In Greece, hundreds of people demonstrated in the port of Piraeus against the arrival of the Israeli cruise ship “Crown Iris”.
Left-wing organizations, trade unions and solidarity groups called for the rally, the news portal “Efsyn.gr” reported.
The demonstrators protested against Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip and called for more support for the Palestinian population.
During the last summer season, the “Crown Iris” was the target of similar protests in Greek ports several times during its voyages through the Aegean.
According to Greek media reports, the rally in Piraeus was largely peaceful. A large number of police were on site to prevent possible disruptions.
Controversial debate
The protests are controversial in Greece. While participants want to draw attention to the situation in the Palestinian territories, critics warn of possible impacts on tourism.
They also emphasize that Israeli tourists should not be held generally responsible for their government’s policies. (sda/dpa)
