According to Defense Minister Israel Katz, Israel is not prepared to accept restrictions on its army’s actions in southern Lebanon. Katz said in a statement that “measures can still be taken to eliminate threats.”

After deadly attacks on Israeli troops, the army recently “reacted with great severity” and “elicited a very large number of Hezbollah fighters,” it said. “Protecting the lives of our soldiers and citizens is our top and absolute priority.”
Even after a ceasefire was announced, Israeli troops remained in southern Lebanon, he reiterated. “Israel will not withdraw from the security zone in Lebanon,” he said. The Lebanese government classifies the area controlled by Israel as occupied territory in violation of international law.
The bilateral framework agreement between Iran and the USA provides for a comprehensive end to military conflicts in the region – including in Lebanon. Israel also accuses Hezbollah of repeated ceasefire violations. (hkl/sda/dpa)
