The Israeli army says it has killed several fighters from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon. The incident in the area of the town of Nabatiya occurred on Saturday despite a ceasefire and the agreement of a framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

The Hezbollah fighters were armed with an anti-tank missile, the Israeli army said in a statement. They were operating near a “security zone” declared by Israel. The army attacked them to eliminate a threat. In addition, a Hezbollah rocket launch pad was destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese news agency NNA reported renewed Israeli attacks in the south, with soldiers also setting houses on fire in the town of Chiam. Local media reported several air strikes by fighter jets and drones in the south on Saturday evening.
Hezbollah rejects framework agreement
After decades of war, Israel and the Lebanese government agreed on Friday on a path to peace and security. However, Hezbollah rejects the agreement. The militia was not involved in the negotiations and strictly rejects the disarmament proposed in the agreement. There are therefore doubts about its possible implementation. Hezbollah leader Naim Kassim described the agreement as “humiliation,” “disgrace” and “renunciation of sovereignty.”
The framework agreement obliges Israel – contrary to what the leadership in Tehran and Hezbollah have demanded – to withdraw completely from southern Lebanon only when non-state groups such as Hezbollah are disarmed.
However, the agreement calls for the Israeli army to gradually withdraw from two zones and for the regular Lebanese army to take control there. (sda/dpa)
