The US military has sunk an Iranian warship with a torpedo, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
An American submarine fired on the ship in international waters, he said at a press conference. According to Hegseth, it was the first attack of its kind since World War II. It was initially unclear exactly which ship it was.

It had previously become known that an explosion had occurred on the frigate “IRIS Dena”. However, the Sri Lankan authorities initially said nothing about the cause of the explosion, the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror reported, citing the Defense Ministry. At least 101 crew members of the sunken Iranian warship were missing in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, according to media reports. 78 people were also injured on the frigate.

Injured crew members have now been rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force. An explosion occurred on the ship before it sank. The Iranian Navy ship reportedly sent distress signals. The frigate was in international waters in the Indian Ocean. (sda/dpa)
