A 23-year-old British woman has been charged with murdering her boyfriend in Dubai. Brooke George is accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death with a kitchen knife. According to the human rights organization Detained International in Dubai George faces the death penalty by firing squad.
The couple met online and George visited the 26-year-old Brit in Dubai for the second time. George says she acted in self-defense and that her boyfriend attacked her in the apartment after going to the bar.
The influencer was arrested at Dubai airport on June 22nd and charged with intentional homicide. If convicted, she faces the death penalty in the United Arab Emirates.
His behavior has changed
George describes her first visit to Dubai to see her boyfriend as “the best time of my life”. But little by little his behavior changed. On George’s second visit, he became violent and hit her. George also found out that her boyfriend only booked her a one-way ticket to Dubai and hid her passport after she arrived.
Fearing for her life, George said, she grabbed a kitchen knife “that was just within reach” during the violent altercation and stabbed him.
George’s mother also paints a similar picture. “After Brooke returned to Dubai for the second time, the dynamic between the two had changed significantly,” she said in a statement. “I have never seen my daughter so scared. She was crying uncontrollably and I could see that one eye was very swollen.”
While in custody at the Bur Dubai police station, she said she was forced to strip naked in front of male officers without a woman present. She found this “deeply humiliating and stressful,” according to the report.
No lawyer present
“Detained in Dubai” reported that George was not allowed access to the British embassy and had to give statements in the absence of a lawyer. The 23-year-old has also not been allowed to contact her family yet.
The case “raises serious concerns about violence against women, the right to self-defense and due process and treatment of British nationals detained abroad,” according to Detained in Dubai.
The British Foreign Office confirmed that it was in contact with George and was supporting her and her family.
