According to a report by the independent portal Meduza, the Russian leadership is preparing for a scenario in which the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz loses elections. The media writes this, citing sources close to the Kremlin. The research was first picked up by the Hungarian portal HVG.
Accordingly, Orbán’s loss of power would be portrayed in the Russian media as a “revolution” triggered by the European Union. However, critical tones towards Orbán can also be heard internally. “Even with our help, they couldn’t achieve anything,” a source is quoted as saying.
Expectations in Moscow have fallen
According to the report, the Kremlin had long hoped that Fidesz could turn the political situation around or at least win in individual constituencies. However, the assessment has now become established that this is no longer realistic.
The sources cited also do not deny that Russia is said to have supported Fidesz – for example in the election campaign on social media. There are no official statements from Moscow or Budapest. (mke)
