Former President Joe Biden’s son was seen as a symbol of the moral decay of the American elite. But a clever campaign has suddenly made him a popular figure.

For years he was one of the most hated figures by the American public: Hunter Biden, younger son of former President Joe Biden, gave his opponents on the running meter reasons to passionately loathe him.
He first made headlines because he had to be admitted to rehab clinics several times because of a severe cocaine addiction. Then pictures kept appearing showing Hunter Biden having wild parties with prostitutes. And as if that wasn’t enough, he also accepted a lucrative board mandate at a Ukrainian energy company, which brought him accusations of corruption.
In short: Hunter Biden was a hate figure for left- and right-wing Americans like something out of an exaggerated Hollywood film. A distillation of all the negative clichés that were told in the country about the political elite in Washington.
Suddenly President Trump’s fans love him
Of all people, this Hunter Biden has now reinvented himself – and is receiving a lot of support for it. “MAGA supporters have changed their minds about Hunter Biden and are now celebrating his abstinence from drugs,” summed up the new-right magazine “Daily Wire.” A former Republican congressman wrote to Hunter Biden: “God bless you.” Some commentators therefore already see him as the “MAGA whisperer” who understands the voters lost to Trump and can bring them back to the Democrats. On Saturday, Donald Trump even had to comment on the question of what he would think of Biden running for president for the Democrats.
Hunter Biden achieved this feat with an appearance at the right-wing religious influencer Candace Owens, who had insulted him for years as a “degenerate” and “member of a scum family”. During the conversation, which lasted more than two hours, Biden managed to present himself as a repentant sinner.
President’s son sees himself as an anti-establishment rebel
In the conversation, the Biden offspring described in detail how terrible the addiction phase of his life was. He constantly braved the fear of relapse and suffered from the fear that further private photos and chat messages of his could be published. “They tore my clothes off, tarred and feathered me and put me in the middle of the village square,” he said. “And I survived.”
The far more important part of his media offensive, however, was: Hunter Biden came out as a supporter of various conspiracy theories that are particularly popular in the right-wing and very left-wing camps. Together with Owens, he speculated about whether the assassination attempts on Donald Trump actually took place as portrayed by the authorities. He claimed that the Israeli secret service had made the corruption allegations against him and spoke of the “Epstein elites” controlling Washington.
This was all well received by host Candace Owens. She even apologized for how she treated Hunter Biden during his most difficult time in life. The conservative audience was also enthusiastic. A wave of warm words rained down on Hunter Biden on Platform X. And when criticism did come, Biden responded cleverly with self-irony – or further attempts to appeal to the frustrated electorate on both sides by launching a blanket criticism of the “elites”. In reality, Americans agree on all important issues.
It most definitely was not. I would never have forgotten my drugs.

In the USA, anything is actually possible
The irony of this story could hardly be greater. Because this puts Hunter Biden, of all people, who has benefited from family privileges throughout his life, at the top of the anti-establishment voices. Although only two years ago, his father Joe – then the most powerful man in the world – used a preventative pardon to ensure that Hunter Biden could not be prosecuted for any criminal offenses.
The reinterpretation of Hunter Biden as an opponent of the establishment follows a logic that hardly seems plausible at first glance. But disillusionment with politics in the USA is now so great that even irrational contradictions of this kind hardly seem to bother voters anymore. The main thing is to pretend to be an enemy of the powerful. (aargauerzeitung.ch)
