The Spanish Hollywood star Javier Bardem sharply criticized the rulers Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu at the Cannes Film Festival. At the press conference for “El ser querido” (The Beloved), the Oscar winner (“No Country for Old Men”) drew a direct line between “toxic masculinity” and the current wars in the world.
Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s psychological drama is about an eccentric director (Bardem) who meets his daughter (Vicky Luengo) again after many years and hires her to shoot a film. The work shows a conflict-ridden father-daughter relationship.
Bardem previously explained in an interview with “Variety” that his character exemplifies toxic images of masculinity – that is, an understanding of roles in which men see themselves as superior, controlling and a driving force. Bardem said he also recognized the patterns of male superiority in Trump, Putin and Netanyahu, which cost the lives of numerous people.
The number of femicides is alarmingly high
In this context, he emphasized that violence against women often results from men seeing women as their property or wanting to dispose of them. In Spain in particular, the number of femicides is alarmingly high. Femicide occurs when women are killed because of their gender – that is, because they are women. (sda/dpa)
