A corresponding bill will soon be introduced into parliament, Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis announced on Wednesday in parliament in Athens.
“Like a video game”
Many minors viewed riding e-scooters “like a video game,” said the minister. Since society, families and the state have so far not succeeded in sensitizing young people sufficiently, action must now be taken, he added.
At the same time, the minister announced stricter controls against the sale of electric scooters that can travel faster than the legally permitted 25 kilometers per hour. The sale of such vehicles is illegal and will be prosecuted more strictly in the future, he said. The debate was broadcast on parliamentary television.
The number of injured e-scooter riders, especially among young people, has recently risen rapidly, according to emergency rooms in Greek hospitals. “These scooters are a plague,” said a doctor on Greek radio. The number of arrivals – including tourists – is increasing rapidly, he added. (sda/dpa)
