The Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) has condemned the attack on the sidelines of Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin.

“Where people become targets of violence because of their identity or their way of life, the basic values of our coexistence are attacked,” said the ZMD in Cologne. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and everyone who had to witness this terrible act.”
If the authorities’ suspicion that the attack was Islamist-motivated is confirmed, “this would be another case in which an extremist ideology abuses religious references to justify hatred and violence and to turn people against each other,” explained the ZMD. The protection of human life is one of the fundamental principles of Islam. Violence against innocent people finds no justification there.
Call for prudence and solidarity
“No one should be the target of violence because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, origin or other personal characteristics,” it said. “Especially in times when extremist ideologies are dividing our society and trying to turn people against each other, we need prudence, determination, cohesion and a clear stance against any form of misanthropy.” (dab/sda/dpa)
