The German Bundeswehr set off for Greenland with an exploration team. An A400M transport plane with soldiers on board flew off, as the German Press Agency (dpa) learned.
The soldiers are to be taken to the capital Nuuk, but are still making a stopover. The Ministry of Defense in Berlin had announced the evening before that 13 soldiers would be sent.
“The aim is to explore the framework for possible military contributions to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region, for example maritime surveillance capabilities,” the ministry said.
After unsuccessful crisis talks between the USA, Denmark and Greenland, Germany and other European countries are pushing ahead with a military reconnaissance mission lasting several days on the Arctic island. The talks in Washington on the conflict over the Arctic island ended on Wednesday without a solution.
In November, the German Navy took the first aircraft of the new P-8A “Poseidon” maritime patrol aircraft into service. With the aircraft, the crew is able to monitor large sea areas, track ship movements and locate submarines using radar as well as acoustic and optical systems. (sda/dpa)
