A forest fire in Austria appears to be largely under control. The district fire department said the situation had eased somewhat and the flames had not spread any further. The fire broke out on Thursday evening. Most recently, an agricultural and forestry area of 110 hectares was affected in the steep terrain near Maria Luggau in the state of Carinthia. The area is approximately the size of 150 football fields.
People or settlements are not at risk, it was said. Attempts are still being made to extinguish the fire using helicopters, primarily from the air. Around 360 firefighters are on duty.
The fire broke out for an unknown reason. Wind and drought encouraged the spread of the flames. The extinguishing work was difficult. A federal road near the fire site was closed to traffic as a precaution. (sda/dpa)
