According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Iran war is not yet over. “It’s not over yet because there is still nuclear material, enriched uranium, that needs to be removed from Iran,” he said on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” according to a preview published in advance.
Netanyahu further explained that uranium enrichment facilities also had to be dismantled and that there were still proxies – including the Lebanese Hezbollah militia – who supported Iran. Iran also continues to produce ballistic missiles. “We may have made a lot of it unusable, but it’s all still there and there’s still a lot of work to be done.” When asked how the highly enriched uranium would be removed from Iran, Netanyahu said: “You go and get it out.” Netanyahu did not want to say exactly how this would work or by when the material would be removed from Iran.
Trump is now also reinterpreting the phase of the war
Even US President Donald Trump no longer considers the US offensive to be completely over. In the “Full Measure” program broadcast on Sunday, he contradicted the statement that the fighting was now finally over. “I said they are defeated, but that doesn’t mean they are finished,” he said.
At the beginning of May, the Trump administration tried to officially declare the fighting against Iran over. Since the ceasefire began at the beginning of April, there have been no more fighting between the two countries, according to a letter from Trump to the US Congress. “The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have ended.” On that day, the USA launched the “Violent Wrath” operation. The military operation against Iran has also ended for his Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.
Through this interpretation of the ongoing conflict with Iran, the US government sees itself in the position of being able to continue to be active in the Middle East even without parliamentary approval. (sda/dpa)
