Investigators have discovered five dead infants in the home of a family in Orange, southern France.
According to a medical examiner’s findings, the discovery was the bones of four infants and the decomposing corpse of another infant, the public prosecutor’s office in Nîmes said.
After discovering again late that his partner was pregnant, who gave birth to a child at home and then went to a clinic, his partner did some research. He came across the human remains in boxes.
The 32-year-old then informed the Orange hospital, which in turn called in the public prosecutor’s office. On Monday evening, investigators arrived at the family’s home and made the shocking discovery. An autopsy was ordered.
The man stated that he was unaware of any possible pregnancies his partner might have had, the public prosecutor said. The 32-year-old mother, who remains in hospital, has not yet been interviewed. An investigation was launched into suspicion of murder.
The youth welfare office is looking after the couple’s two other children, aged eight and nine. The infant born on Sunday should be temporarily placed outside the family before a juvenile judge decides on the further course of events, according to the public prosecutor’s office. (sda/dpa)
