The German Defense Ministry also announced that it would send soldiers and spoke of an “exploration” to explore the framework for possible military contributions to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region.
Macron spoke of “joint exercises” that Denmark had organized and which were called “Operation Arctic Endurance”. Sweden and Norway have also confirmed their participation.
The largely autonomous Greenland is part of the territory of Denmark, a NATO member. However, US President Donald Trump wants to annex the huge Arctic island to the USA. According to a government spokeswoman, Macron addressed the threats in a meeting on Wednesday. If the sovereignty of a European and allied country were affected, the resulting consequences would be unprecedented, said Macron. France is following the situation with the greatest attention and will take its measures in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty. (sda/dpa)
