Finland to Establish Europe’s First M270 MLRS Service Center

A maintenance and support center for the M270 artillery system will be established in Tampere on the premises of Insta. The agreement was signed by the Finnish Defense Forces, the Finnish technology company Insta, and Lockheed Martin.

This was reported by the American corporation.

The agreement was made possible by a memorandum of understanding signed by Lockheed Martin and Insta last December during the presentation ceremony for the first of 64 F-35A fighter jets destined for Finland.

“The fact that Finland has become the first European country to host an MLRS maintenance and repair center demonstrates the high level of expertise in our defense industry. The industry’s indirect participation in the F-35 program will help create new jobs and further enhance the high-tech capabilities of the Finnish defense industry,” stated Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen.

The new technical center demonstrates Lockheed Martin’s commitment to European customers and enhances the readiness of regional maintenance services for M270A2 and HIMARS operators across Europe. It is part of indirect industrial cooperation within the Finnish F-35 program.

“Our partnership with Insta enables us to establish Europe’s first specialized CFCS maintenance center in Finland, expanding support capabilities for M270A2 and HIMARS systems across the continent. This facility ensures supply chain reliability, accelerates the delivery of logistical and technical services, and guarantees the readiness of fire control systems for Finnish and NATO users,” said Gaylia Campbell, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Tactical Missiles.

The Finnish company was also represented at this year’s Eurosatory as a strategic partner of the Finnish Defense Forces and a leading provider of cybersecurity services to government agencies.

The M270A2 systems, which are in service with Finland, are capable of firing GMLRS guided missiles with a range of up to 90 km, their extended-range version, the ER-GMLRS (up to 150 km), as well as ATACMS tactical missiles with a range of up to 300 km.

In the future, the system will be able to use the Precision Strike Missile with an initial range of up to 499 km.

This expansion of capabilities allows for the destruction of high-value targets: command centers, logistics hubs, and air defense systems.
