During the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA, thousands of visitors had to leave the festival grounds in the capital Washington due to a severe weather warning. The organizers called on guests to seek shelter in surrounding museums, ministries and other public buildings. Information about when and how things will continue will be communicated as quickly as possible.
Thousands of people then marched through the streets near the White House and the National Mall. The participants – many wearing the national colors red, blue and white – sat in crowded cafes or camped with their folding chairs directly on the sidewalk. After extreme heat with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, there was a storm warning for the evening.
In addition to concerts, the event on the National Mall was supposed to include a speech by US President Donald Trump. A large fireworks display was also expected.
Shortly after the evacuation call, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would give his speech no matter when. It is currently scheduled for 11 p.m. (5 a.m. German time). (ome/sda)
