Attempts to rescue the humpback whale, which stranded again off the German Baltic Sea coast, are being discontinued.
At a press conference, experts said that the whale would soon die. “We’re actually giving up hope here,” said Prof. Dr. Bachek from the Maritime Museum. Greenpeace marine biologist Thilo Maack was also of the opinion that there was almost no hope for the whale.
“For reasons of piety, you should leave the majestic animal alone so that it can die in peace,” said the Sea Shepherd expert. The whale is now too weak and sick to free itself.
The animal should be left alone at its current berth, said the Environment Minister of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Till Backhaus, who spoke of a very emotional day. (hkl/sda/dpa)
