In southern France, an eleven-year-old girl has been missing for days – now the judiciary is investigating suspected kidnapping.
The child stopped reporting after school ended on Friday afternoon in the small community of Fleurance near Toulouse, and the parents then called the police early in the evening. As the Auch public prosecutor’s office announced, surveillance camera footage showed the girl in a man’s car on Friday afternoon. The 41-year-old was taken into police custody.
The man initially stated that he had dropped the child off at the swimming pool at his request. Prosecutor Clémence Meyer said at the weekend that these statements seemed quite imprecise and contradictory.
The public prosecutor’s office did not comment on any further statements made by the suspect when the formal investigation began. According to prosecutor Meyer, the child never ran away. At the weekend there was no evidence that the eleven-year-old disappeared voluntarily.
As on Friday and at the weekend, the search for the child continued in the community. Divers, dogs and helicopters were also used. (nil/sda/dpa)
