According to President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador has seized more cocaine than ever before. “A total of 6.68 tons of cocaine were seized, the value of which is estimated at approximately $167 million,” the president said.

The drugs were seized during two Navy missions in the Pacific. Six suspected smugglers from Colombia and Ecuador were arrested. Bukele spoke of the “heaviest blow against drug trafficking” in El Salvador’s history. According to the government, cocaine discoveries in the Central American country since the beginning of the year have totaled around 13 tons.
El Salvador is not a major cocaine-producing country, but is used as a transit route by smugglers who transport drugs from South America across the Pacific towards North America. President Bukele has made the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking a central part of his security policy. (sda/dpa)
