Diplomats from several countries are currently trying to make direct talks between the USA and Iran possible at Bürgenstock NW. Switzerland offers them “a discreet and reliable framework” for this, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) announced on Saturday.
Discussions were actually supposed to take place here on Friday.Image: keystone
The FDFA did not provide any information about the diplomats present “for reasons of confidentiality”. The US portal “Axios” and the broadcaster CNN had previously reported, citing a US official, that US negotiator Steve Witkoff was on his way to Switzerland. US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is already in Switzerland.
Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi traveled to Iran to discuss the continuation of negotiations in Switzerland. Meetings were planned there with the President of the Iranian Parliament Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Washington and Tehran signed a framework agreement this week that calls for an end to hostilities in the region. Further negotiations on controversial points such as the Iranian nuclear program are to follow within 60 days. A first round of talks in Switzerland, scheduled for Friday, did not take place due to new attacks between the Israeli army and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. (hkl/sda)
