Donald Trump is losing his grip at home and abroad – The Irish Times

Sir, – Donald Trump’s grasp on reality is becoming more tenuous. Meanwhile, his efforts to shore up his popularity with his base, before next month’s midterm elections, become more frantic.

It is pathetic and reprehensible to see him seek a deal to buy Russian diesel while blaming Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure for the significant rise in oil prices.

Surely not even the most zealous of his Maga disciples will take this at face value without asking the obvious question of the impact on prices of Trump’s ill-advised war on Iran?

His announcement of a bilateral ceasefire on energy infrastructure came as a surprise to Ukraine and Russia. Russia’s response has been to launch more attacks on Ukraine.

Russian president Vladimir Putin continues to play Trump for the fool he is, happy to be in receipt of both millions of US dollars in support of the financing of his war machine and Trump’s pro-Moscow utterings on the need for an election in Ukraine.

Is it too much to hope for, if and when the US electorate delivers the midterm response to Trump’s administration that is warranted, that the European Union, Canada and the United Kingdom will find the backbone to bypass Trump in leading a concerted and intelligent response to geopolitical challenges? – Yours, etc,

GERRY PRIZEMAN,

Clontarf,

Dublin.
