At least four people have died in severe floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Vietnam, state media reported on Saturday.
Since Wednesday, more than 238 hectares of rice fields and other crops have been damaged in four mountainous provinces in the north of the country; Livestock and poultry also died, according to the Vietnamese disaster management agency.
Authorities have deployed 500 rescue workers to search for missing people and evacuate residents from landslide-prone areas. The natural disasters between January and June in Vietnam claimed at least 30 lives and caused more than $21.7 million in damage.
The Southeast Asian country experiences heavy rainfall between June and September, but scientists say climate change is causing extreme weather events to become more frequent and have more devastating consequences. (hkl/sda/afp)
