Car drives into crowd – two dead

A major police operation is currently underway in the German city of Leipzig. A police spokesman confirmed that a car drove into a crowd of people in the city center Central German Radio (MDR). The incident occurred on Grimmaische Strasse, a shopping street.

Leipzig’s mayor Burkhard Jung and the Saxony police confirm that there are two dead. The driver of the vehicle was arrested, the police communicated on X. In addition to the two dead, there were numerous injured people.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver was traveling at 70 to 80 km/h, reports MDR. Meanwhile, a female person is said to have been on the windshield of the car.

No further details are currently known. There is a “confusing situation,” a police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency. There is no longer any danger. (hkl)
