The captain of the cruise ship “Hondius” affected by the hantavirus, Jan Dobrogowski, commented on the crisis for the first time in a video message.
He thanked his crew and passengers for “patience, discipline and kindness”. “These past few weeks have been extremely stressful,” said the captain, who comes from Poland. But people showed “care, cohesion and strength” under these most difficult circumstances.

He saw that “people can trust each other, even if help is not immediately available.” The captain wished everyone on board a safe journey home.
The ship arrived on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife on Sunday. The remaining passengers and most of the crew were to be evacuated on Monday. The “Hondius” is scheduled to set sail again this evening and head to Rotterdam. (sda/dpa)
