Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says he wants to support his work with his testimony before the Epstein Control Committee in the US Parliament. Gates said in his brief statement to journalists before the hearing in the Capitol that he was happy to be here voluntarily and to testify. The meeting in Washington is not public. He wanted to make an introductory statement. Gates said he hoped his testimony would be helpful to the committee’s work to achieve “justice for the victims.” He did not reveal any details about his statement.
Republican committee chairman James Comer also said before the questioning began that members of Congress wanted to know about Gates’ relationship with Epstein and his aide Ghislaine Maxwell: “What did he see? Did he know what was going on? Was he involved in any of this?” Comer emphasized that there were no allegations of misconduct against Gates.
Goal of the parliamentary committee
The control committee in the US House of Representatives is supposed to politically examine the abuse network of the financial investor and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019. In files that the US Department of Justice was required to publish by law, there is also a draft email from 2013 that was stored in Epstein’s account and is apparently aimed at Gates. Merely naming someone in the files doesn’t say anything per se.
Multimillionaire Epstein from New York ran an abuse ring decades ago, to which many women and minors fell victim. Over several years, Epstein is said to have abused minors himself in New York and Florida. Epstein died in prison in 2019 at the age of 66.
Gates had contact with Epstein
Gates, like many other celebrities from numerous countries, had previous contact with Epstein. Months ago, Gates described meetings with him as a mistake. He was never on Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean, which is said to have been the center of the abuse ring. The Microsoft co-founder emphasized that he had never met any women.
Gates is not the first celebrity to appear before the oversight committee. Some time ago, former President Bill Clinton and his wife also spoke independently to the committee members. Bill Clinton also had contact with Epstein. (sda/dpa)
