Due to persistent ashfall caused by the volcanic activity of Mount Etna on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily, neither take-offs nor landings are currently possible at Catania Airport. According to the operating company SAC, all incoming flights will be suspended. In addition, all departures are subject to a complete stop. According to the current status, the measures should apply until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Passengers were asked not to go to the airport until they had spoken to their airline. The airport announced further information on the development. As can be seen on the airport’s website, almost all flights have been canceled, including connections to Germany.
Europe’s largest volcano has been rumbling again since the weekend. The Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported strong ash emissions from an opening on Mount Etna early on Sunday morning. The activity intensified and formed a huge eruption cloud that rose around 1.5 kilometers above the summit. Residents reported on the Telegram platform about ash and dust raining down – even in more distant areas. (sda/dpa)
