A video from the French army showed an A400M military aircraft dropping orange-colored fire-fighting material over wildfire-affected forest areas near Lacanau on Saturday, July 25.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered the use of the A400M to contain raging forest fires around the Cap Ferret peninsula, which showed little sign of abating.
The Airbus can transport up to 20,000 liters of extinguishing agent, around three times as much as the Canadair CL-415 that are currently in use.
However, the Airbus has not yet been finally certified for this FAZ reported. In addition, the firefighting missions are difficult because the missions are flown very close to the fire, which can lead to turbulence and poor visibility.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called in the military to help exhausted firefighters battling fires across the country after a record heatwave caused nearly 6,000 additional deaths. (reuters, emm)
