Rubio announced the new meeting in Switzerland on Wednesday in Kuwait City. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA) responded to a query from Keystone-SDA in the evening: “The FDFA is not commenting on this.” High-ranking representatives of the two countries only met at the Bürgenstock in Nidwalden at the weekend.
Mediators described these discussions as “positive” and “constructive” and spoke of “encouraging progress”. US Vice President JD Vance had already described the meeting as “historic” on Sunday. A first foundation stone has been laid.
Tehran dampens US optimism
However, the Iranian side immediately dampened the US optimism shown: Iran had not held any negotiations in Switzerland about its nuclear program and had not entered into any new commitments, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told the state news agency Irna on Monday.
And Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva contradicted Vance’s statements about joint agreements in recent negotiations.
According to Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kasem Gharibabadi, working groups were set up during the talks to deal with the issues of ending sanctions against Iran, the nuclear program, reconstruction and the monitoring and implementation of the negotiations, as Irna reported. According to the mediating states Pakistan and Qatar, there are also two contact groups on issues relating to the Strait of Hormuz and the ceasefire in Lebanon.
In addition to US Vice President Vance, US mediators Steve Wittkoff and Jared Kushner came to the meeting on the Bürgenstock, and on the Iranian side, Parliament Speaker Mohammed Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi.
The aim was to transform the basic agreement signed by Washington and Tehran on Wednesday last week into a final agreement. The process is expected to take around two months until a final agreement is reached. At the end of February, the USA and Israel started a war against Iran. (sda/afp/ansa)
