British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is still under massive pressure after rival Andy Burnham’s entry into parliament – and could very soon follow calls for his resignation, according to the British media.
The Guardian newspaper wrote on Sunday that Starmer would announce his resignation on Monday “after enormous pressure from Labor MPs to clear the way for Andy Burnham to become Labor party leader.” The newspaper “The Observer” reported on Saturday, citing sources within the Labor Party, that Starmer would resign on Monday and present a timetable for his departure.

According to the BBC, Downing Street said on Saturday evening that nothing had changed in the Prime Minister’s position since Friday. After his internal party rival Andy Burnham entered Parliament, Starmer confirmed on Friday that he would remain in office and face any possible election for the party leadership.
Economy Minister: Starmer thinks about the future
Economy Minister Peter Kyle also contradicted the reports. «I have no reason to believe that they are true. “I see a lot of speculation out there,” he told Sky broadcaster. Nevertheless, he admitted that Starmer is thinking about a lot: “At the same time, he is also trying to create a space in which he can think and reflect on the political realities and challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead.”
The pressure on the Prime Minister had increased massively in the last 48 hours. According to reports, numerous MPs and cabinet members suggested he leave – including, according to information from Sky broadcaster, high-ranking figures such as Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper. The Prime Minister retreated to his country estate Checkers with his family at the weekend.
Choosing Burnham as the trigger
Burnham won the by-election in the Makerfield district on Thursday. Only now, having won the parliamentary seat, can he force Starmer into the election for the leadership of the ruling Labor party and, if he is successful, replace him as Prime Minister. Another possible leadership candidate is former Health Minister Wes Streeting.
If, despite all the speculation, Starmer sticks to his stance of ruling out resignation, Burnham is likely to trigger the process for a leadership election in the ruling Labor party very soon. (hkl/sda/dpa)
