According to the US military, the week-long US naval blockade of Iranian ports has been lifted. The regional command responsible for the Middle East (Centcom) announced on “All military measures by the USA to enforce the blockade have been stopped,” it continues.
The background is the framework agreement concluded with Iran, which, among other things, provides for free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a key strait for trade between Iran and Oman.
At the same time, Centcom emphasized that US forces remain stationed in the region. This is intended to ensure “that all aspects of the agreement are adhered to and apply without restriction.”
Almost a week ago, the US Regional Command announced that 139 ships had been diverted since April 13 – the start of the US blockade. Nine other ships did not want to cooperate and were therefore made “unsuitable”. The focus was on the blockade around the Strait of Hormuz. But the US military also occasionally took action against oil tankers far from the strait. (sda/dpa)
