US Vice President JD Vance caused an uproar in Great Britain with his comments on the murder of Henry Nowak. In an X post on Friday, Vance called for “righteous anger” and attributed the murder of the 18-year-old in Southampton, southern England, to an alleged “mass invasion of migrants.”
The case surrounding the murdered student has sparked a debate about inequality and racism in Great Britain in recent days. Riots broke out during a protest in Southampton on Tuesday.
In the last few days there have been attempts to “intervene in our democracy and sow discord on our streets,” it was said shortly after Vance’s comments from Downing Street. One should accept the wishes of Nowak’s family and not exploit his death for “division, hatred or tensions,” a spokesman said, according to British media.
Nowak was stabbed in Southampton in December 2025. However, the police believed the perpetrator, who claimed that he had been racially insulted as a follower of the Sikh religion and portrayed himself as a victim. Nowak’s serious injuries were not initially visible. His protestations that he had been stabbed and couldn’t breathe were ignored. He was handcuffed while he was already dying.
On Monday, the perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years. Bodycam footage of the incident went around the world.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk also recently shared controversial posts about the controversy several times on his social media platform X.
Again and again criticism from the USA
Right-wing populist politicians and right-wing extremists see the case as alleged evidence that efforts to combat racism in the police in Great Britain are now leading to the white majority population being disadvantaged. Liberals and leftists suspect a campaign with a racist background.
It is not the first time that President Donald Trump’s US government has taken action against Great Britain. The Republican repeatedly accuses the British and other Europeans of misguided migration policies, among other things. (sda/dpa)
