In the Albanian capital Tirana, thousands of people demonstrated against a planned luxury resort owned by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Under the motto “Albania is not for sale” they protested against the construction project on the island of Sazan, which cost around 1.2 billion francs. Possible environmental damage and corruption risks are criticized.
The project is part of a larger tourism effort in the Zvernec area near the coastal city of Vlora and is being driven by Kushner’s company, Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC. A luxury resort is planned on the site of a former military base.
Last year, the Albanian authorities accelerated the project by granting Kushner the status of a “strategic investor”.
The project is encountering considerable resistance. During the local protests, in the Zvernec area, there were clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
The special public prosecutor’s office has begun investigations in connection with the construction project.
For years, the Albanian government has pursued the goal of strengthening its economy by expanding tourism.
