In Lörrach and Grenzach-Wyhlen (D) near Basel, unknown people duped passers-by with worthless jewelry and a fake Rolex within two days. In both cases, an unknown person reported an emergency situation, as the Freiburg police headquarters announced on Thursday.
In one case in Grenzach-Wyhlen on Tuesday, a 72-year-old pedestrian was spoken to in perfect German by the driver of a “well-kept, white limousine”. He pretended that he had a trip ahead of him and urgently needed cash because of an emergency. In return, he offered the passerby his Rolex on his wrist, as the communiqué says.
The 72-year-old got into the limousine, had the stranger drive him home and gave him 2,500 euros. In return he received the watch, two gold rings and a gold necklace. Only later did he realize that the jewelry was worthless and the Rolex was a fake.
Only worth 30 euros
In the other case, a 33-year-old was approached by a man in Lörrach on Wednesday. He stated that he urgently needed money to travel home to England. The passer-by withdrew money from the ATM and gave him 1,000 euros in exchange for two gold chains, gold rings and a Rolex watch.
The injured party then went to a gold buyer. He estimated the value of the exchanged goods at just 30 euros, as the police write. (sda)
