Newer helicopters cannot land on the White House lawn – Donald Trump now wants to act.Image: keystone
According to media reports, US President Donald Trump is considering further external changes to the White House.
Construction of a permanent helicopter landing pad could possibly begin in the summer, the Washington Post reported, citing unnamed people who are said to be familiar with the matter. The Wall Street Journal also reported on such a plan.
The reason: According to media reports, newer helicopters cannot currently be used at the White House. Their design poses the risk of setting the lawn on fire due to hot air being directed downwards. That’s why older models are still in service there, which, according to the media, should have been phased out years ago. US presidents climb into helicopters on a lawn on the south side of the White House.
Since the start of his second term in office at the beginning of 2025, Trump has already changed the look of the White House in several places: for example, he had the east wing demolished and is planning a huge ballroom. The Oval Office was also lavishly decorated with gold. However, according to reports, plans for the helipad have been in place for years. (sda/dpa)
