According to US President Donald Trump, China’s head of state Xi Jinping has offered help in the Iran war. “He would welcome it if a deal was reached. And he offered, he said: ‘If I can help in any way, I would be happy to do that,'” Trump said in an interview on Fox News, excerpts of which were initially published. When asked whether Xi had actually said that, Trump explicitly confirmed this.

Trump emphasized that Xi wants the Strait of Hormuz to be opened. The strait, which is important for world trade, has no longer been freely passable since the beginning of the Iran War, which severely hinders oil exports. China is considered the most important importer of Iranian oil and is therefore particularly interested in opening the strait.
In a previously published interview with NBC News, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Trump had not asked Xi for “anything”. “We have not asked for China’s help, nor do we need their support,” he said. However, Trump pointed out the issue to Xi. (sda/dpa)
