The USA supports the United Nations with 1.8 billion dollars (around 1.5 billion euros) for humanitarian purposes. The money will help “reach millions of people in the largest crisis regions with life-saving support,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The United States had previously given $2 billion to the United Nations Emergency Relief Office (Ocha) in December.

However, before President Donald Trump took office, the USA’s financial donations to Ocha were sometimes many times higher. In addition, the USA still owes the UN, which is under severe financial pressure, billions in membership fees – according to the UN, around two billion dollars in the regular budget and around 2.2 billion dollars in the budget for peacekeeping missions.
US President Trump has repeatedly expressed criticism of the UN, and during his time in office the country also left many UN organizations and withdrew from agreements under the auspices of the United Nations. (sda/dpa)
