An unusual smuggling attempt caused a stir at Bangkok airport: A 19-year-old from Taiwan had attached dozens of live turtles to her body with adhesive tape.
The passenger wanted to return home from Thailand – but then security officials became aware of her unusual behavior, as the Bangkok Post newspaper reported, citing wildlife inspectors at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

During a closer examination, the emergency services discovered several cloth bags on her body in which 30 protected Indian star tortoises (Geochelone elegans) were hidden. The trade in animals is very lucrative, but forbidden. According to authorities, one turtle was already dead.
Popular because of its striking tank markings
The animals were seized and the woman was arrested. According to media reports, she is said to be a flight attendant for a Vietnamese airline. She is now being investigated for violations of the Endangered Species Protection Act.
The Indian star tortoise is considered endangered. It is listed in the international species protection agreement Cites and achieves high prices on the black market. Because of their striking shell markings, the animals are highly sought after in the pet trade, which leads to intensive poaching. In addition, they are affected by loss of habitat due to agriculture and settlement as well as consumption in some regions. (hkl/sda/dpa)
