WATSON.CH

A forest fire has gotten out of control in Austria. Up to 70 hectares of forest in Carinthia’s Lesachtal are affected.

There are currently six helicopters, around 40 fire brigades and around 220 emergency services in action. The state alarm and warning center reports that the operation could last several days.

The fire broke out east of Maria Luggau on Thursday evening. The region is extremely dry, which facilitated its rapid spread.

Ground troops could hardly intervene, the fire department told the Austrian news agency APA on Friday morning. Therefore, more helicopters were requested.
