Lee emphasized that the controversial drone flights were carried out by individuals and without government approval. “Although this was not our government’s intention, we express our regret to the North that the irresponsible and reckless actions of some individuals have created unnecessary military tensions,” Lee said during a Cabinet meeting.

In January, North Korea accused the South of violating North Korea’s sovereignty with several drone flights. Among other things, a surveillance drone is said to have filmed important facilities in North Korea on January 4th before the North Korean military shot down the flying object.
At the end of March, three South Koreans were charged in the case, including an intelligence official and a military officer. They are accused of having invaded North Korean airspace with unmanned drones four times since last September. The exact motives are still unclear.
North and South Korea are still formally at war, as the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 only ended with an armistice, but a peace treaty was never signed. (sda/dpa)
