Parts of the island of Oahu have been flooded due to heavy rain. Around 4,000 people were evacuated. A 120-year-old dam is at risk of collapsing, causing further devastating damage. There have been no fatalities so far.
The heavy rains were caused by a Kona low. A seasonal, slow-moving subtropical cyclone that typically forms west or northwest of Hawaii during the winter months. The floods are more severe than they have been in over 20 years – experts blame climate change. The damage caused is estimated to cost a billion dollars. (emm, dw, sda, reuters)
