The WHO chief did not say who was responsible for the attack. According to the Sudanese non-governmental organization Emergency Lawyers, it was a drone attack by the Sudanese army.
Army fights against rebels
In the power struggle in Sudan that has been ongoing since April 2023, de facto ruler Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan is fighting with the help of the regular army against his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo and his Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. The RSF dominates Darfur in the west of the country, the army in the east, center and north. The civilian population in particular is suffering from the conflict.
As a result of the latest attack, the clinic’s pediatric, maternity and emergency wards were damaged, according to WHO. The hospital is no longer functional, Tedros wrote. He also published pictures of a damaged building. The WHO is supporting its local partners to close gaps in health care.
Tedros: “Peace is the best medicine”
With the latest incident, the total number of victims in attacks on health care facilities since the war began almost three years ago rose to 2,036 dead and more than 700 injured, according to the WHO. Tedros warned it was high time to de-escalate the conflict to protect civilians, health workers and humanitarian workers. “Health care must never become a goal. “Peace is the best medicine,” wrote the WHO chief.
