Yesterday evening the Earth’s satellite appeared deep red in the sky. The coloration occurs because the moon rises in the middle of a total lunar eclipse. The moon moves into the shadow of the earth. However, the sunlight that is refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere still reaches the moon – and makes it appear blood red from Earth. A total lunar eclipse is only possible when the sun, earth and moon are in line.
