Norway’s King Harald V (89) has to stay in hospital in Tenerife for a few more days for observation and further treatment. The king’s doctor said this, according to a court announcement. King Harald’s general condition is therefore good; he responded positively to the treatment.

The Norwegian monarch came to the Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur on Tuesday during a private vacation in Tenerife with Queen Sonja (88) because of an infection and dehydration. On Wednesday, the king’s personal doctor landed on the Canary Islands and announced that the infection came from an inflammation on King Harald’s leg.
The king’s personal physician speaks of a serious situation
“When almost 90-year-olds come to the hospital with an infection, it is serious,” said personal physician Bjørn Bendz, according to the statement. That’s why you have to get a good overview of the king’s health before he can leave the hospital – even if his condition is currently stable, Bendz explained.
King Harald is the oldest currently reigning monarch in Europe. It’s not the first time that King Harald has been hospitalized while on vacation. In 2024, during a stay in Malaysia, he had to go to a clinic where a temporary pacemaker was inserted. (sda/dpa)
