Over the weekend and last week there were again sit-ins, rallies and protests in different parts of the country, including at Tehran University, the Amir Kabir University of Technology. The new semester starts there this week.
The actions were held primarily to commemorate those killed in protests last month. The protests in January began over economic grievances and quickly expanded into the largest wave of protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Loud BBC The US-based human rights organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has confirmed at least 6,159 deaths during these protests, including 5,804 protesters, 92 children and 214 people linked to the government. The agency also said it was investigating 17,000 additional reported deaths.
Demonstrators are also taking to the streets in other parts of the world. Like in Barcelona. They called for US intervention to protect Iranians from the regime. Last Tuesday, February 17th took place in Geneva talks between the US and Iran, aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear weapons program. At the meeting of Trump’s Peace Council On Thursday, Trump gave an ultimatum of ten to fifteen days to reach an agreement in the long-standing nuclear dispute. Otherwise bad things would happen. The US has already increased its military presence near Iran and President Donald Trump has said he is considering a limited military strike. (emm)
